Fallout 3 Prank Call

Someone called into the radio show Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, and the person described a dream that sounds a lot like the one in Fallout 3. The caller did a pretty good job at not revealing too much and it’s definitely an interesting listen.

$199 Not the Magic Blu-ray Price After All

It looks like all of the people that said blu-ray will go “mainstream” when the price hits $199, are all wrong. Hundreds of these players all over the place this holiday season with the $200 price point, but only 8 percent of holiday buyers were even considering upgrading to Blu-ray. So what’s the magical price for this fancy machine?

New Xbox 360 model may be Red Ring killer

jasper 300x140 New Xbox 360 model may be Red Ring killer

With the new “Jasper” model of the Xbox 360 out, there’s a new chipset, which is supposed to be better in every single way than the old one. So that would mean that any Xbox 360 made after October 23, 2008 should have the chipset.

There are also many other changes in the new version of the 360. There’s graphics chip, that’s now 65nm, which means that it won’t run as hot as previous Xbox’s, so hopefully no overheating issues and power consumption will be less of a problem. This should fit quiet nicely into the motherboard socket, which means less system failures all together. Also since it’s smaller in size, it’s less expensive to produce which explains why Microsoft has been dropping prices like no other.

The main failure cause [with the older 90-nanometer graphics chips and the boards that came with them] was “thermal fatigue” of the leaded C4 connections between the graphics chip die and its organic carrier. The underfill had too low a glass-transition temperature for the amount of heat generated. That caused cracking over time, resulting in graphics chips coming loose.

In previous versions, Microsoft addressed this with better heat sinks. The temperature sense diode was off in a corner and didn’t reflect the true temperature in the core regions. Jasper has shifted to a material with a significantly higher transition temperature. Coming up with this fix took time, since the new material had to be identified and tested. The smaller 65nm chip die also helps since the stresses that cause the thermal fatigue are related to size.

Does this mean that the red ring of death will be no more forever?

Windows 7 allows DirectX 10 acceleration on the CPU

it photo 111009 26 300x199 Windows 7 allows DirectX 10 acceleration on the CPUMicrosoft has just announced that it’s also planning to introduce a new feature called WARP in Windows 7 that allows you to run Direct3D 10 and 10.1 on the CPU. Microsoft says that WARP 10 will support all the features and precision requirements of Direct3D 10 and 10.1. The feature also supports up to 8x multi-sampled anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and all optional texture formats. The minimum CPU spec needed is just a simple 800MHz CPU, and it doesn’t even need MMX or SSE, although Microsoft says that WARP 10 will work much quicker on multi-core CPUs with SSE 4.1.

Microsoft says that the technology is also targeted at casual games, explaining that ‘the majority of the best selling game titles for Windows are either simulations or casual games, neither of which requires high performance graphics, but both styles of games greatly benefit from modern shader based graphics and the ability to scale on hardware if present.’ Microsoft also points out that the technology could be useful for ‘emulators and virtual environments that are attempting to display advanced 3D graphics.’

Is Sony Already Working On The PSP2?

Is Sony already working on the PSP2 this close after the PSP-3000 came out. I’m not one of the people that jumped on the bandwagon and bought one the day it came out. After hearing about the shitty-ass battery life, and all of the other flaws, I thought it would be fine to stick with my old one.

Here’s what BeefJack.com has to say about the PSP2, and what they think it might contain:

Currently, Imagination Technologies‘ SGX range of graphics chipsets can be found in electronic products such as palmtops and ultra-mobile PCs. The graphics chipset has been called by some the most powerful on the market.

So after brain storming I came up with a few ideas that I feel the new PSP 2 should have:

- Same trim design of the current Slim(PSP-2000)

- Come In Piano Black & Resistance Limited Edition Army Camo-Green

- Build in TV tuner

- Fm Radio

- Longer Battery life

- build in hard-drive

- Second Analog (Nub)

- 3G

- Better Speakers

- Standard headphone port

- Battery light that turns Red instead of flashing Green

- Includes a built-in microphone (perfect for online play and Skype calls)

- Improved screen (That allows for better performance in natural light conditions, maybe even auto adjust for sun light and flare ups)

- Come in a bunch of different bundles. (Can you say Resistance: Retribution Limited Edition Bundle, Prinny Bundle and maybe even Metal Gear Solid Bundle)

Interesting list, and I’d like to see a lot of those ideas integrated into the PSP2 when it comes out. What do you guys think about when the PSP2 will be released, and what would you like to see integrated/changed in it?

Blu-ray Sales Sail To All-Time Highs

Blu-ray sales continue to surge, and here’s the total confirmation of it:

  • Blu-ray had its best month of sales ever in October, with consumers buying 2.3 million discs, according to Home Media Research. That’s the first time disc sales have surpassed the 2 million mark in a single month and it’s nearly five times greater than the 470,000 discs purchased in October 2007.
  • For the year so far, Blu-ray disc sales are running about four times higher than in 2007
  • Blu-ray disc sales have crossed the 20 million mark since the format was introduced, with 14 million of those (70%) sold this year.
  • In October the 1,000 Blu-ray title was been announced for release.

That’s all in the US alone. Well, it looks like Sony is actually doing something right, and one of their products is actually selling. (Sorry Sony/PS3 fanboys, that’s that douche coming out in me.)
