Mozilla proposes 3D graphics standard

medium Mozilla proposes 3D graphics standard

With all the posts and uproar of Firefox lowering in the ranking in the browser market, it’s nice to hear this news that the browser is really looking to dominate the market with it’s advances.

Firefox firms teams is teaming up with Khronos Group to help bring a new 3D experience to web browsers.

Khronos has created an Accelerated 3D on Web working group that will consider various approaches to creating a graphics standard, including the exposure of Open GL ES 2.0 capabilities within an ECMAScript container such as a web browser.

Mozilla has offered to chair the group, and will include this as the default functionality after the 3.5 release of their web-browser.

“With more and more content moving to the web, and JavaScript getting faster every day, the time is right to create an open, general purpose API for accelerated 3D graphics on the web,” said Google engineering director Matt Papakipos.

“The convergence of increasing JavaScript performance and pervasive access to accelerated OpenGL and OpenGL ES presents a potentially historic opportunity to make open, general purpose 3D capabilities available to web developers and web browsers everywhere. ” Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group added.

  2. Nope. Honestly, I think that Microsoft needs to can IE, or get their heads out of their asses and get in gear with it. I mean, when I used it, it crashed constantly, and websites displayed so poorly it wasn’t even funny.
