A word on NHL 10 – Game Freezing and other issues
I had hoped to have a review on NHL 10 for you this week. However, due to the game being completely unplayable, I won’t be able to do that right away.
Something tells me the folks at EA Sports Canada didn’t spend enough time testing their latest release. NHL 10 came out to the masses on September 15th, and I am nothing but disappointed. Unfortunately, I’m not the only one.
Yesterday I finally got the chance to try this year’s edition, and after NHL 09 was such an incredible game, and the NHL 10 demo showed some great things, I was quite excited to sit down and win myself another Stanley Cup.
That’s when things went wrong. First up, character creation. Your character is “created” the minute the game starts, you type in your name, position, and handedness and run through a tutorial. After that, the logical thing would be to go to Create a Player and update your equipment, stats, location, look, etc. Right? Wrong. No matter how many times you tell it to accept changes it won’t. You’re always reset to some blonde bastard from Vancouver. Instead, you have to go to My Pro > Pro Shop (where you can buy various upgrades for your character), and update your character there. This wasn’t so clear and it took me a good hour and 15 minutes to get my character set up.
Ok, so my player is ready, lets go to Be A Pro mode and start myself on the road to the cup. This is gonna be great! Presentation looks spectacular as ever. I’m on the 3rd line for the AHL team, the game starts with me on the ice, things are going pretty great, I’m checking, I’m shooting. I put myself on the bench to get a little rest and as I hit the button to put myself back on the ice, there is a stoppage in play, and one of the many cut-scenes begins to play… and that’s where it ends for me. The game freezes, the audio continues to play, but I never get on the ice. ONE SHIFT. ONE FUCKING SHIFT?!?
Certainly this is a fluke. Turn the machine off, turn it back on, start over, be a pro mode, first game, first shift, playing well, damn, got scored on, on the bench, waiting, waiting, stoppage in play…. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU!!! Frozen again…
Took the disc out, looked for scratches, nothing. At this point I wished to read about other peoples experiences with the game in hopes that maybe I just had a faulty copy, not so much. A LOT of people are having trouble with this game, whether it be on the XBox or the PS3, though it looks like the Be-A-Pro freezing issue is only happening with the PS3, there are huge connection issues and freezing elsewhere throughout both platforms.
EA Sports, I implore you, get this game patched TODAY.

Lol that sucks I was going to do a review on it too but i think I still will I havent had any problems yet but I almost postively will and yah i couldnt change my character either they were a little non descriptive on that

First, no – not everyone is having problems with NHL 10 on PS3. I’ve been playing Be a Pro and online exclusively, added custom soundtracks and everything’s working 100% fine without a single freeze or bug so far.
Also, EA released v1.01 last night. Perhaps that will fix your issues.

Unfortunately the patch didn’t help a thing. The first stoppage of play that doesn’t involve a goal being scored or a trip to the penalty box, and the game freezes up.

Well, whether it affects everybody or not playing the game, it seems to be a big enough problem that a good majority of people are having troubles and EA needs to really fix some shit.

I bought the game and in be a pro mode it randomly crashes. Sometimes on the ice during cut scenes and sometimes loading specific screens.
I have also had the game freeze while loading the start menu for the whole game itself.

exchanged for a second copy that also freezes constantly. Funny thing is that it freezes on my ps3 80gb but it plays perfectly fine on my daughter’s ps3 slim???

Just in case you wanted an update – I just bought it – 10/4/2009 – and it still freezes on the PS3 in be a pro mode – I have not been able to finish even the first period of one game. total BS

this is serious shit. i played 60 matches in Be a GM mode and now when i try to play more, the hole xbox freezes. ive made some roster chances before starting the gm mode (i made some player tranfers), but i think that i have right to do it. it works fine when i play with the default rosters, but its so lame because there are some great players in other leagues such as Martin Straka, Dominik Hasek etc. fix this! u have responsibility with game, and that it works without any freezing problems.

I’ve played the game quite a bit on the ps3 80 gig fat. I have had some freezing. Mostly in Be a Pro mode. All things considered, it hasn’t frozen enough for it to be too much of a problem. I was pissed on one occasion when playing Be a Pro. I had a real nice goal and I was going to save the replay but it froze. Seems like I’m luckier than some where it’s freezing all the time. Even though it hasn’t froze on me a lot, it would be nice to get a patch and get it fixed.

I’m in my second season of GM mode, I’ve made it to Febuary, now it freezes whenever I try to play the next game, or make a trade or anything. The patch from september hasn’t done anything. This sucks balls

Freezes in Be-A-GM, freezes in Be-A-Pro, freezes online in EASHL.
I get about 1 freeze in per hour. Always in the menus or loading screens. Never during play. System: PS3 slim 120gb
Its annoying. Since there is simply no support on that issue, i’m very upset about EA. I don’t think that i will buy NHL11.

2nd season in be a gm then played a game in ahl that was the first time with my ahl team i usually always play with phoenix so then i finish the game wt ahl team want go go bach in nhl then pressing r2 and the bug begins not able to play in nhl but the stastof nhl players are there only ahl calendar try to play and sim to see what happen nothing excep when i play ahl cant take team only cpu team is there one way to get out of this witout erasing????thx

Had the same issue – returned the game to EA Sports thinking it was a glitch with my copy. Took them almost three months to send me a replacement and it still have the same problem… Awesome…
