PS3 Exclusives We Never Got To See

JackTrettonE3

The successor to Sony’s PlayStation 3 has been announced, and with it marks the end of the 3rd PlayStation generation, and likely the end of a few titles announced to be in development exclusively for the PS3.

With the PS4 due out this holiday season, I decided to take a look back at a few of the announced exclusives that never were.  Number 1 with a bullet in my mind, was the great big huge mega exclusive from Rockstar Games of which we ever only received one official image, the spy/stealth third person action game, Agent.

Yep, this is all we’ve ever seen.

A few years ago, a couple of concept art images from someone working on the game were posted to LinkedIn and then promptly taken down showing us not much more than a few corridors of a building we may find ourselves in.  At E3 2012, when Jack Tretton was poked about it, it seemed the project may be doomed, at least, for this generation:

“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The minute I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent, but I’d suggest you interview one of those guys. That’s what I’ve said for the last five years, and I’ll continue to do that.”

Ouch.  While it has since been confirmed that the game is indeed still in development, the likelihood of us seeing this title withers away further every day.  We know that Rockstar owes Sony an exclusive, and we know that it’s not Grand Theft Auto V, so maybe, just maybe Agent comes out on the PlayStation 4.

LastGuardian PS3 Exclusives We Never Got To See

The next game I’m sure everyone has had on their minds for years is from within Sony itself, Team Ico’s The Last Guardian.  As recently as 2 days ago, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios apologized for the continued delays to the game, also stating “We are waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian.

Does this mean we’ll finally see the game come out on the PS4?  Things are definitely looking up for that.  Will we see it at E3?  I know if I was trying to sell a new console, this would be on the list of games I’d want to showcase.

FFVSXIII PS3 Exclusives We Never Got To See

Does anyone even remember this guy with the bad-ass gunsword?

Now, we’ve also had some great looking exclusive titles announced but later cancelled, like the action game Eight Days, and the bad-ass samurai Ni-Oh, and countless others, but one that more than likely should’ve been cancelled by now, but somehow hasn’t been is the title announced by Square Enix, Final Fantasy Versus XIII.  This was supposed to be the Final Fantasy title to fix all that had gone “wrong” with Final Fantasy over the years, with a unique story, characters, world, game design, battle system and musical score.

This game has officially been in development longer than any other Final Fantasy title since Final Fantasy became a thing, and at this point with Square Enix showing up to Sony’s conference last week to mention a new Final Fantasy was in the works, I think we may have lost our window on this one jumping up to the next generation, which is too bad, because it really did look good.

Finally, and only because I don’t like the news (and lack of news) I’m getting from SEGA these days on this title, Yakuza 5.

Yakuza 5 PS3 Exclusives We Never Got To See

This recently came out for the PS3 in Japan in December and has already climbed to #12 in sales for the year in Japan in 2012, so we know our friends to the east are crazy about this franchise, but unfortunately the lackluster sales of Yakuza’s zombie spin-off may cause us in the west to not receive a localized version of Yakuza 5.  I think this would be a damned shame given how fun the story and beat-em-up play-style is.  I recently heard someone liken this franchise to Streets of Rage meets Shenmue, and I have to agree.  If you like a killer Japanese mob story and are jonesing for an arcade-style beat-em-up, search no further.  Anyway, if we do never end up getting this in North America, I would implore SEGA to release it someday on the PS4.
