For those of you familiar with franchises such as Diablo and Torchlight, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing can be quickly summarized as a like-minded action-RPG with a gorgeous “gothic-noir” steampunk setting. As the son of Bram Stoker’s famous vampire slayer/old superstitious medicine man, it’s up to you to travel to Borgovia, in this stylized Eastern European world, and vanquish the mad scientist threatening to overthrow the land. There’s not much more to the story than that. There are plenty of people to help on the way to Borgovia, some choices to be made that can have minor consequences later, but the story becomes almost completely straightforward when you find the “Resistance” in Borgovia’s depths. While the plot may lack any sort of depth (you’re basically told on a number of occasions that Van Helsing is fighting because he’s a monster hunter, no other justification needed), it’s played out in a fresh, humorous way, patted down with some witty lines.
