DPrime Retroview: Sonic the Hedgehog

Default Prime Sonic the Hedgehog Retroview DPrime Retroview: Sonic the Hedgehog

With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on the horizon, now is a better time then ever to look back at the classics which it is building off of. The general idea of early Sonic games is that their all speed trips all the way to the end. Despite laying the blue prints of the series, the original Sonic the Hedgehog actually has a much larger focus on platforming rather then speed. If you are coming back to the original title to escape the stop start action of recent entries like Sonic and the Black Knight or the werehog sections of Sonic Unleashed, you will be severely disappointed.

DPrime Preview: Monster Hunter Tri

Dprime Preview MHtri white 585x320 DPrime Preview: Monster Hunter Tri

Online games don’t fare well on the Wii. Friend codes and a lack of a real online community really hurt the system’s online potential. But Capcom plans on giving Wii owners a title with a real online component with Monster Hunter Tri, a hack and slash title. While you may not have heard of the Monster Hunter series, it has been very successful in Japan. Most of the titles have made it to Europe and North America, but the sales of the series has been less than stellar in these regions. Monster Hunter Tri, the third major installment in the series, will be hitting North America and Europe next month. The demo is available now at Gamestop for free, but many locations are requiring a pre-order to get the demo. Of course, if they are giving you a hard time, you can always just pre-order it and then come back at a later date and cancel it.

DPrime Review: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

DPrime Review NSMBW DPrime Review: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

When Mario moved into the third dimension with Super Mario 64 it seemed like there was no looking back for console Mario titles, and for almost fifteen years that remained true. Now Mario has finally returned to the second dimension on home consoles with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but it comes with a bit of a twist adding simultaneous multiplayer which is a first for the series. New Super Mario Bros Wii is also the debut of Nintendo’s Super Guide to help more casual players pull through the game. The additions of these features may give you the impression that New Super Mario Bros Wii is a side scrolling Mario title aimed at casuals, but fortunately that is far from the case.

Weekend Primed: 10 of the Greatest Video Game freakouts ever

weekendprimed1 Weekend Primed: 10 of the Greatest Video Game freakouts everVideo games are a form of entertainment. They provide us something to do when we’re bored, they give us an excuse not to hang out with our loved ones, and they keep us competitive with other people. There are some of those people though that content to freaking out over video games whenever they get killed, they do something wrong, or their team is a bunch of douches. Well this Weekend Primed is a homage to the greatest freak-outs over video games caught on video (oh, and we’re not posting the goddamn World of Warcraft “greatest freakout ever” or the N64 kid videos).

10) The art of bitching while playing World of Warcraft

It takes a lot of skill to be in public, where people can watch you, and be able to bitch this much while playing World of Warcraft. It’s two minutes of these two bitching at each other (mostly the prick in the white jacket).

9) Monitor gets with help of keyboard and DDR frustration

The video is pretty cool when he’s rockin out to DDR on a keyboard. But I think that’s one of the better questions though: who the fuck plays DDR with a keyboard? That’s his first problem. The next is, look at his room! I mean this person should be in a padded white room if he’s putting his head through the wall because of video games.

Half-Life 2 Mod: Post Script Episode Microview

post scripthl2 585x262 Half Life 2 Mod: Post Script Episode MicroviewWell I don’t know what happened, but for some reason it took me fucking forever to play through the first part of Post Script, the 5-part episodic mod based on Half-Life 2. So here is a microview (that’s a short review don’tcha know), and I’m going to do one for each episode that’s released.

Okay, so in Post Script you’re left in a post-apocalyptic world, where you explore the world, go through the remains of the town, and explore everything. The game is very puzzle-based, whether they’re easy or not. Everything even from like getting into a building is kind of built into a puzzle no matter how much brain power it takes or not.

Along the way in the game, you are being talked to by Celeste, and you are constantly being referred to as “cherub”. We don’t know much more about this at this point, but the tone in which Celeste talks, how negative but also the tone of her voice when she (I’m assuming)  is talking to you is very unique and clever. Celeste’s narrative also is very real and down to earth, like a real person is talking to you.

Overall the game takes about 15 minutes to complete, it took me 2 months to actually play through and get this post up about (sorry Lewis), but the mod is great and honestly, I’m stoked for the other episodes for Post Script. I really think that this could be the start to something great. Keep it up.

You can download the game at the official Post Script website. Go check it out, download it, and enjoy it.

DPrime Retroview: Space Channel 5

Default Prime Space Channel 5 585x336 DPrime Retroview: Space Channel 5

Before rhythm and music games required large plastic accessories many games, like Parappa the Rapper, Vib-Ribbon, and Frequency, just used the normal controllers. Space Channel 5 is much like these titles as it also uses the standard controller. Released on the Dreamcast in 2000, Space Channel 5 was one of the titles SEGA released to try to broaden the audience of the Dreamcast. Their attempt brought to life a simple rhythmic dancing game with a futuristic style that is as unique as it is wacky. While the title is one of the many unique titles SEGA created for the Dreamcast, the question is should you be looking to add this title to your collection or not.

Dprime Review: Phantasy Star Zero

Phantasystarzerologo Dprime Review: Phantasy Star Zero

Phantasy Star Online was one of the very first console massively multiplayer online role playing games. While the Dreamcast’s life span was short lived, Phantasy Star Online’s life was far from short as it moved to almost every other home console last generation. While Phantasy Star Universe is the first real sequel to Phantasy Star Online, many changes were made that pushed many fans to go back to the original Phantasy Star Online. Now that the fan base is split between Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Online, SEGA has created a title that goes back towards the original Phantasy Star Online with Phantasy Star Zero for the Nintendo DS. While it sounds all fine on paper, the question is if SEGA can really duplicate the success of the original Phantasy Star Online with this new entry and bring the full experience onto the DS.

Default Prime: Worst of Gaming in 2009

worstgaming Default Prime: Worst of Gaming in 2009

2009 was a great year for gaming, and in expressing the greatness of it, we created what we thought the best of 2009 was. Well we said at the end of the article that there would be a worst of gaming in 2009 article, and here it is. We will reminisce through this past year that the gaming industry had for us. These are not things to be proud of, actually they are. So if you made one of these games, are a fan of any of these games, or just disagree with us, don’t.

Use of a peripheral

Tony Hawk Ride

Oh Tony Hawk, how we don’t love you at all. The games were good and all when they first came out 1999, but when everybody realized that you couldn’t actually do a back flip on a skateboard flat on the ground, they had to turn to a “realistic” environment. This included a skateboard peripheral that you used to do the tricks and move around and everything, but for $120, a 3 hour story, and just an overall shitty game, we were more than disappointed.

Whored-out game/franchise

Guitar Hero

Like there was even a question on whether this award could go to anyone else. Yes, the guitar-hero franchise is extremely whored-out, they’re sucking you’re money away, and Bobby Kotick is sitting in his golden chair made of shit laughing. That’s why the award below this one goes to…

Person that we want to punch in the face

Bobby Kotick

We’ve never met the man, but that doesn’t stop him from getting this award. As the CEO of Activision Blizzard, he has no problem taking the Guitar Hero franchise, offering up 3 different games a year with sub-par music for every single console, then every single piece of DLC that they could possibly release making even more money. They’ll shamelessly copy what Rock Band and other companies are doing and incorporate them into their own game, and we can all tell that he doesn’t even play his own games.

Most over-hyped game

Modern Warfare 2

News about Modern Warfare 2 have been coming out since…the release of the first Modern Warfare game back in 2007. Then, a couple months before the game came out there was news literally everywhere. “OMG GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE”, “Modern Warfare 2 wants you to be a terrorist”, and all of that bullshit. We all knew that the game was getting hyped to death and when the end product came out, I think a lot of people were disappointed. I really liked the single-player, I think it could have been longer and added more, and the online was solid, with new maps, weapons, and additions from it’s predecessor. But essentially it’s the same. It’s a great game in the end, but lets face it, there is not another game that got this hyped up this year.

Shameless rip-off

Xbox Avatars

Microsoft released the Xbox Avatars when the NXE update hit Xbox 360’s. With the popularity of the Wii and it’s addition of Mii’s, there’s no doubt that somebody would copy them, and that somebody happened to be Microsoft. Of course, you can customize all of their gear and whatnot by spending your money and having it affect you in no way whatsoever, but lets face it, I don’ think the avatars would ever have come out if the Wii wasn’t a success or wasn’t incorporated into it.

Sidekick to have by your side

Sheva Alomar – Resident Evil 5

I’m not a huge fan of the Resident Evil series. I’ve played the first two and the fourth one and had some fun, but when playing Resident Evil 5, I noticed that besides what I thought were clunky controls, you’re little sidekick Sheva Alomar is fucking worthless. When I say worthless, I literally mean you can’t even use her as a shield when you shoot at zombies. I don’t think artificial intelligence was included with her when the game came out. That’s how bad it is.

Boycott/Bitchy group of people that get too much attention

Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group

When Left 4 Dead 2 was announced, a lot of people thought that there were many broken promises from Valve about the continued support and additions to the existing game. With Survival Mode, “Death Toll” and “Dead Air” for versus mode, the “Crash Course” campaign, and other minor updates here and there, they didn’t think all of that was enough. Everyone payed attention to them for a while, but after they found out that they were wrong and they were tired of getting made fun of and couldn’t come up with enough excuses to make them right, they disbanded. Oh well, we’ll miss them. not.

Game that featured Italian accents

The Godfather II

I am a fan of the classic Godfather film, but when it came to the game, the Italian accents didn’t make up for what kind of terrible game came out of this. With terrible graphics for the consoles it came out on, brain-dead AI, everything felt unfinished about the game.

And the worst of the year goes to….

The PSPgo

There was really no question whatsoever to who this award would go to. And it’s the PSPgo. This $250, kind of sleek device is download-only, but the only problem is the price, and how Sony went about selling it to stores and customers. I mean, it’s not even worth it. They did a terrible job pricing with the PS3 now at $300, I mean who wouldn’t spend the extra $50 and get the full blu-ray playing console? Yeah, nobody (the sales show). There were a lot of cool things that the PSPgo could have brought to the table, but Sony failed to do so making the PSPgo the shittiest thing to come out in 2009. Congratulations and stuff.
