Sony to release a PlayStation smartphone? Hopefully it’ll be as popular as the PSPgo
We all know that the Wall Street Journal is legit and gives us the answers to everything that we want. Well now they’re telling us the tried and true rumor that Sony will be coming out with a smartphone, developed by Sony Ericsson, that will be “capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games”.
The device is said to be released later in 2010, but so is the device that Sony has confirmed that “blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PlayStation Portable”. Well all I can say is good luck Sony. We can only hope that all of your mobile endeavors go as well as the recent PSPgo.
Yeah, you know that download-only device that they released recently.
Wait, you forgot.
Yeah.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood hitting the PSP this summer
I may only be posting this because I’m a huge Full Metal Alchemist fan (first anime I ever really got into), but here it is. Namco Bandai has just announced that Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, will be hitting the PSP this summer, and is based of the current anime series of the same name.
I’m not going to take the time to explain the story, because if you’re even interested enough to read this post then you probably already know it. The game looks to be a lot like it’s PS2 predecessors, which is action based combat split into levels. You’ll be able to upgrade their points and special abilities, and use alchemy to kick the shit out of everyone.
Above you can see the logo for the game and below a good collection of screenshots from the game. We’ll hook ya up with more information as we get it.

Final Fantasy VIII making it rain on the PSP and PS3
Yup, the original Final Fantasy VIII will be hitting the PlayStation Network today and will be available to download on the PSP and PS3 in PAL territories for €9.99. I know you can’t resist Squall Leonhart, and trust me, it’s one hell of an epic adventure.
Read MoreLarry Sparks, Vice President Brands PAL Region of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “Final Fantasy VIII is one of the best known and loved adventures in the Final Fantasy series. Over 10 years on and the game is still as endearing and challenging as ever. We’re pleased to be releasing Final Fantasy VIII on PlayStation Network in PAL territories from today.”

PS2 Classics to hit the PlayStation Store?
Original PlayStation games are already hit on the PlayStation Store, and rumors about PlayStation 2 titles hitting the service have been abound for quiet a while now. Well, PlayStation senior VP Peter Dille, in an interview with IGN tells us what he thinks about the possibility.
“From our side, we’re going through our own studio organization and trying to make sure all these old games are out there so that we can lead by example, but we’re also communicating with all the third-parties about the success of the Final Fantasy games, and other PS1 and PS2 classics,” Dille tells IGN. “By all means, I think people can look for more of that because once the third-parties see how this works, it’s just found money. There’s not a whole lot of work that has to go into it and once we can get it up on the network, it finds an audience pretty quickly.”
He also remarked that they PlayStation folks are “working really hard on” binging original and PS2 games to the service. Sounds almost like a confirmation to me.
Considering the remarkable backwards compatibility on the PS3 for PS2 games…wait, there isn’t any?
Seems like a viable way of bringing in some cash eh? I’ll be content with some Shadow of the Colossus and ICO in HD please. Thanks.

Sony happy about the iPad, unfortunately people aren’t coming to the PSP
Yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata wasn’t really stoked on Apple’s recent announcement of the iPad saying that “It was a bigger iPod Touch”, Iwata told Associated Press, adding that the new device offered “no surprises”. I can’t help but agree.
Well, Sony has come out and expressed a lot of optimism and happiness about the device.
“Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony,” Sony’s John Koller, Director Hardware Marketing, told the Wall Street Journal. “When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.”
The only problem is…well, nobody is really coming to the PSP for a deeper, richer console there Sony. You were pretty close, but I think you meant to say the DS or possibly just not moving from the iPhone or Touch to begin with.
Nice try though.

Metal Gear Solid gets a bundle in large on the PSP
The PSP has a nice little collection of Metal Gear Solid games and whatnot, so Konami decided to bundle EVERYTHING together and sell it to the public at a very nice little price. This includes Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Portable Ops Plus, and the digital graphic novel of the series. All for $29.99. Crazy. This can be picked up on PlayStation Store or PlayStation network right now. So if you don’t already have all of this, then go buy it. All you PSP fans out there…yeah.

Atlus announces Persona 3 Portable coming to North America

Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed that Shin Megami Tensei®: Persona®3 Portable™, the handheld adaptation of one of the most fun RPGs of all time, would release in North America for PSP on July 6th of this year.

For those of you who played through the game on the PS2, there will be dozens of hours of new content featuring the unprecedented addition of a new player-controlled female player who offers gamers a host of new social links and opportunities. There are a number of additional gameplay improvements and enhancements to streamline the experience for the handheld version.

While this isn’t the announcement I’ve been hoping for of Persona 5, this will at least help pass the time until then, with over 100 hours of gameplay.

SMT: Persona 3 Portable is currently scheduled for release on July 6, 2010.

Default Prime: Worst of Gaming in 2009
2009 was a great year for gaming, and in expressing the greatness of it, we created what we thought the best of 2009 was. Well we said at the end of the article that there would be a worst of gaming in 2009 article, and here it is. We will reminisce through this past year that the gaming industry had for us. These are not things to be proud of, actually they are. So if you made one of these games, are a fan of any of these games, or just disagree with us, don’t.
Use of a peripheral
Tony Hawk Ride
Oh Tony Hawk, how we don’t love you at all. The games were good and all when they first came out 1999, but when everybody realized that you couldn’t actually do a back flip on a skateboard flat on the ground, they had to turn to a “realistic” environment. This included a skateboard peripheral that you used to do the tricks and move around and everything, but for $120, a 3 hour story, and just an overall shitty game, we were more than disappointed.
Whored-out game/franchise
Guitar Hero
Like there was even a question on whether this award could go to anyone else. Yes, the guitar-hero franchise is extremely whored-out, they’re sucking you’re money away, and Bobby Kotick is sitting in his golden chair made of shit laughing. That’s why the award below this one goes to…
Person that we want to punch in the face
Bobby Kotick
We’ve never met the man, but that doesn’t stop him from getting this award. As the CEO of Activision Blizzard, he has no problem taking the Guitar Hero franchise, offering up 3 different games a year with sub-par music for every single console, then every single piece of DLC that they could possibly release making even more money. They’ll shamelessly copy what Rock Band and other companies are doing and incorporate them into their own game, and we can all tell that he doesn’t even play his own games.
Most over-hyped game
Modern Warfare 2
News about Modern Warfare 2 have been coming out since…the release of the first Modern Warfare game back in 2007. Then, a couple months before the game came out there was news literally everywhere. “OMG GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE”, “Modern Warfare 2 wants you to be a terrorist”, and all of that bullshit. We all knew that the game was getting hyped to death and when the end product came out, I think a lot of people were disappointed. I really liked the single-player, I think it could have been longer and added more, and the online was solid, with new maps, weapons, and additions from it’s predecessor. But essentially it’s the same. It’s a great game in the end, but lets face it, there is not another game that got this hyped up this year.
Shameless rip-off
Xbox Avatars
Microsoft released the Xbox Avatars when the NXE update hit Xbox 360’s. With the popularity of the Wii and it’s addition of Mii’s, there’s no doubt that somebody would copy them, and that somebody happened to be Microsoft. Of course, you can customize all of their gear and whatnot by spending your money and having it affect you in no way whatsoever, but lets face it, I don’ think the avatars would ever have come out if the Wii wasn’t a success or wasn’t incorporated into it.
Sidekick to have by your side
Sheva Alomar – Resident Evil 5
I’m not a huge fan of the Resident Evil series. I’ve played the first two and the fourth one and had some fun, but when playing Resident Evil 5, I noticed that besides what I thought were clunky controls, you’re little sidekick Sheva Alomar is fucking worthless. When I say worthless, I literally mean you can’t even use her as a shield when you shoot at zombies. I don’t think artificial intelligence was included with her when the game came out. That’s how bad it is.
Boycott/Bitchy group of people that get too much attention
Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group
When Left 4 Dead 2 was announced, a lot of people thought that there were many broken promises from Valve about the continued support and additions to the existing game. With Survival Mode, “Death Toll” and “Dead Air” for versus mode, the “Crash Course” campaign, and other minor updates here and there, they didn’t think all of that was enough. Everyone payed attention to them for a while, but after they found out that they were wrong and they were tired of getting made fun of and couldn’t come up with enough excuses to make them right, they disbanded. Oh well, we’ll miss them. not.
Game that featured Italian accents
The Godfather II
I am a fan of the classic Godfather film, but when it came to the game, the Italian accents didn’t make up for what kind of terrible game came out of this. With terrible graphics for the consoles it came out on, brain-dead AI, everything felt unfinished about the game.
And the worst of the year goes to….
The PSPgo
There was really no question whatsoever to who this award would go to. And it’s the PSPgo. This $250, kind of sleek device is download-only, but the only problem is the price, and how Sony went about selling it to stores and customers. I mean, it’s not even worth it. They did a terrible job pricing with the PS3 now at $300, I mean who wouldn’t spend the extra $50 and get the full blu-ray playing console? Yeah, nobody (the sales show). There were a lot of cool things that the PSPgo could have brought to the table, but Sony failed to do so making the PSPgo the shittiest thing to come out in 2009. Congratulations and stuff.

Want to pay for a PSN Avatar? Well now you can!
Yep, after my post yesterday I thought that people would stop being dumbasses for more than a couple minutes.
I was wrong.
I don’t own a PS3, but you know the little images by your name on PSN, well Sony wants to start charging for those. Yeah, a little jpeg image is going to cost you money.
They hit the European PSN first at 20p per picture, about $.49 cents here. That’s about $.50. That means if you by two that’s a $1, and there are so many fucking better things to spend your money on than an image. That doesn’t do anything. Thanks Sony.
