Check out Metroid Prime in 3D
3D is all the rage right now obviously. While CES was going on, every other story that was posted on any site that was covering the news was about 3D. Well gaming is obviously going to get sucked into everything with 3D games and whatnot, so people are taking it upon themselves to render games that have already came out in 3D, so we can see what they look like, like what has been done with Metroid Prime.
You can check out vd0man’s set of photos on Flickr if you wish to see more. I actually kind of like how these look despite my hatred for the red and blue effect.

Wear 3D Gaming Glasses instead of Awkward cardboard red and blue ones
3D, the technology of the 90’s with those god-awful glasses, and terrible colors that gave you headaches and that nostalgic feeling of playing the Virtual Boy (fun right?) is the new hip technology of now. With some quasi-popular movies and the OH SO popular Avatar, it only makes sense that the tech would come to the next biggest entertainment medium around, gaming.
Well at CES, GUNNAR Optiks, the maker of “gaming glasses” has announced that they will be making a line of non other than 3D gaming glasses. Cool?
GUNNAR says that their glasses will be distortion-free, will be high quality, and are eyewear.
“While typical 3D eyewear is stamped from a flat sheet of plastic, GUNNAR lenses are shaped, formed and cut to provide distortion free optics,” said Joe Croft, co-founder of GUNNAR and EVP of Research Design & Development. “For the amount of technology and effort that goes into the creation and delivery of the content, it is a shame that the weakest link in any 3D system today is the eyewear used to view the final product. We are proud to announce our success in creating lenses of the highest optical quality to give a premium visual experience.”
What do you guys think? Casual 3D glasses to plop on when you’re gaming? 3D isn’t super huge yet, but the glasses cost $89 to $149 a pair, I don’t know if it’s really worth the investment.

Mozilla proposes 3D graphics standard

With all the posts and uproar of Firefox lowering in the ranking in the browser market, it’s nice to hear this news that the browser is really looking to dominate the market with it’s advances.
Firefox firms teams is teaming up with Khronos Group to help bring a new 3D experience to web browsers.
Khronos has created an Accelerated 3D on Web working group that will consider various approaches to creating a graphics standard, including the exposure of Open GL ES 2.0 capabilities within an ECMAScript container such as a web browser.
Mozilla has offered to chair the group, and will include this as the default functionality after the 3.5 release of their web-browser.
Read More“With more and more content moving to the web, and JavaScript getting faster every day, the time is right to create an open, general purpose API for accelerated 3D graphics on the web,” said Google engineering director Matt Papakipos.
“The convergence of increasing JavaScript performance and pervasive access to accelerated OpenGL and OpenGL ES presents a potentially historic opportunity to make open, general purpose 3D capabilities available to web developers and web browsers everywhere. ” Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group added.

CES 2009: Sony teases with high-quality PS3 3D

3D technology is something that was a big question about being showed at CES. “Don’t get caught up with specs,” the Sony representative told Ars Technica. “We’re not going to talk about specifications. This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction.”
No details about how the 3D affect would be achieved have been announced, or even snuck out, but what’s clear is that, glasses or not, the 3D affect is freaking amazing. Wipeout 3D was showed, and people have cited it as one of the best examples of 3D out there. It looks like we’ll have to wait for Sony or other companies to announce how the technology will be used, and when it will likely be released. No matter what, this might be worth getting a PS3 for.
